Pacing - Boy Scouts advance at their own pace. Unlike Cub Scouts, where boys advance in rank by getting older, here they must do the work to advance. A new scout that attends most meetings, weekend campouts, and summer camp at Tomahawk should be able to complete their First Class requirements within a year.See also Northern Star Council's page on Boy Scout Advancement and the special section on Eagle Advancement and the required paperwork and forms.
Eagle candidates and their parents will probably find the information at EagleScout.org quite helpful.
